Pacaya Samiria National Park

Pacaya Samiria National Park: The Mirror of the Jungle

Pacaya Samiria National Park is one of the crown jewels of the Peruvian Amazon, a vast expanse of protected wilderness often referred to as “La Selva de los Espejos” — the Jungle of Mirrors — for the way its calm, blackwater lagoons perfectly reflect the sky and forest. Spanning over two million hectares, it is Peru’s largest national reserve and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

This immense floodplain is a mosaic of rivers, channels, cochas (lagoons), and seasonally flooded forests. The Ucayali, Marañón, and Huallaga Rivers converge here, giving rise to a living landscape that changes dramatically with the rise and fall of the waters. During the rainy season, vast tracts of forest become submerged, creating an aquatic world where canoes glide through what seems like an endless water garden.

Wildlife highlights

Pacaya Samiria shelters extraordinary wildlife. Its waters host river dolphins (pink and gray), giant river otters, black caimans, and countless fish, including the mighty Arapaima gigas (paiche), one of the world’s largest freshwater fish. On land and in the trees, the park supports jaguars, tapirs, peccaries, sloths, and a spectacular diversity of monkeys. More than 400 species of birds — from colorful macaws and hoatzins to elegant herons and kingfishers — fill the reserve with movement and song.

Flora and forest

The park’s plant life is equally remarkable. Towering ceiba trees dominate the canopy while aquatic plants like the Victoria regia spread enormous leaves across still lagoons. Medicinal plants and fruit-bearing species provide sustenance for wildlife and for the local communities that live in and around the park.

People and culture

For Indigenous and riverine communities, Pacaya Samiria is more than protected land — it is home, pantry, and spiritual heritage. People coexist with the forest through sustainable fishing, harvesting, and traditional knowledge passed down through generations, helping ensure that both people and nature continue to thrive.

Pacaya Samiria National Park is not just a destination; it is an immersion into one of Earth’s last great wildernesses — a place where the boundaries between water and sky blur, and the Amazon reveals its most pristine and timeless essence.
